grey hawk

We head to the Green Dragon Inn to return the sword of Chaos to Rikard. It is busy and full of river folk. We hear rumbles about the ruins and adventurers who returned with treasure and a dead dragon, apparently we are being noticed. We hear someone say that once Zagyg held 9 lesser demigods captive in Zagyg’s tower and only Iuz escaped. Obregon pauses to listen some more and hears that a demigod is not as powerful as a full god. If only Iuz escaped then there must be 8 still trapped. That does not seem possible but how many favors could you get if you rescued a god? We move to the bar and the place goes quiet as a dashing dark haired man with fancy wizard clothes enters. Sanna realizes that this is Tenser, an archmage and moves to meet with him. Rikard notices us and says hello. We ask for a moment in private and we all move off to the side. We tell him we have his sword and return it to him. He replaces the sword on his hip with the blade of chaos and looks like he is whole again. He offers us free drinks but we decline as we have an appointment. He is disappointed. Meanwhile, Sanna walks up to Tenser as he asks to join the Lord’s table. A game of wizards chess is going on at the table but he doesn’t appear to be paying attention. She asks why he is here? He is here for entertainment and wants to know something about Sanna. She stammers and tells him the basics of her past. She notices he is staring off and there is a mysterious figure on the far side of the room; A man with bushy blond hair and a military coat who appears to be staring at Tenser. Tenser removes a small object wrapped in an azure handkerchief and places it on the table. It gets knocked over and he rises to leave. He says he would enjoy speaking with her more later and exits the building rather abruptly. The blond man moves next to the table and picks up the object, places it in his pocket and returns to where he was. We make our apologies to Rikard, promise to return and share our adventures, and head to meet Tiira. Back at Kellicks manor, we find Pike being shown around. Kellick tells him that he has been left behind because Tiira doesn’t want a member of the thieves guild associated with her mission. She is wanting the party to deal with something that the guild is prohibited from being involved in directly. He then says that he has news concerning Lawrus. Some of his assets have come in to the possession of other parties. He had a number of exotic creatures for use in the arena. He had 2 golden creatures that are now owned by Henway who has a menagerie. Not long after they arrived at the menagerie, they went missing. Finding them could help shed light on Lawrus’s nefariousness and Kellick would like to know what happened to them. They are arumvoraxis, golden legged creatures. Magic was likely used in the theft. As they tour the manor, Pike notices a secret door, gets the feeling that there is another creature moving around and a ring that Kellick is wearing seems to be a signet but nonmagical ring. Pike makes his way out and heads home. Tiira meets us part of the way and leads us off towards the old city. We go to a rundown apartment where Tiira pulls a yellow glass bottle and a plain green metal ring wrapped in a red silk cloth. The guild has learned of our exploits in the ruins and that we are likely looking for access into the tower of magic. Getting in requires dealing with grandfather magic and then you need the key. I know where the key is and if you get an item that the guild needs we will get the you to it. 200 years ago Zagyg founded the guild of magic and created the ziggurat with sealed rooms at the top. The key is in the rooms but you can’t just walk in. Fortunately we know a secret entrance. They will help us get the key in exchange for a small service. There is a bronze statue of a monkey that is desired by a patron which is also in the sealed study. We are reluctant but she expresses disappointment if we don’t. While we are debating she tells us we are independent operators that do not report to her but we must follow instructions. The secret entrance was found by a mention in a book in the special collections room. She can help us get to the room where we need to find the book and figure out where the entrance is. The little yellow bottle is ancient and when the wearer of the ring twists it he and all who are touching it are transported into an interdimensional space in the bottle. After doing so, a member of the guild will get us in to the special collections room. After 12 hours, twist the ring again and we will reappear. 12 hours later reverse the process to get out. Return tomorrow if you are interested and remember to not tell Pike what is going on. We ask for cash payment but she can’t offer that. She can offer Naribo’s hand which is a powerful and intelligent sword. She does send us to Nulligan who may be able to get us magic items that are hard to find. We head back to the house to meet Pike and decide to decline the thieves guild job. We share stories. We head back to the Green Dragon Inn where we see Tenser and Kellick playing wizard chess. Sanna joins them and watches the game. The rest of us move to the bar and speak with Rikard. The blond man is also at the bar. He interrupts our tale with a couple questions and earns a flat stare from Beltin. Rikard introduces the blond as Captain Gallancz, the owner of the inn. They begin to speak about battles they were involved in near the temple of elemental evil. It seems that Gallancz has seen things in the ruins and may have been in all 3 towers. We do obliquely ask Rikard for a reward for the return of his sword. He says he needs to talk to the Captain about it. Captain appears particularly interested in the infernal dragon though we defeated it too quickly to make it a good tale. Rikard asks what we would value besides coin. We mention magic, favors and information. He points out a group that he believes may have been in the tower of magic recently. We ask them about getting in and they were there 6 days ago. There was a crazy elf inside a cathedral to Boccob, then went down and ran in to a bunch of traps through a maze. That led in to a level full of dead monsters so they left. We ask Rikard about locating magic items for sale. He directs us to Nulligans, Halls Apothecary, and Kellicks tower. The next morning we set about selling our treasure and in the process we hear that someone had tried to deface Rigby’s body. We go by Nulligans Trove looking for some items. He is a balding male that looks to be a wizard of some sort. He doesn’t have what we are looking for but can get it in a couple of days. We place a couple of orders and then go to Henways estate to begin investigating the disappearance of the golden creatures. Pike introduces us at the door and someone goes to fetch Henway. He is an eccentric old man and wonders what we have caught. We tell him we are trying to find his missing creatures and he says they were stolen not missing and wonders what we have found. We explain we want to see where they were stolen from and look for clues. He leads us through the menagerie and past some very exotic creatures. We finally reach an empty enclosure that the Arumvoraxes were kept in. We ask questions about the creatures, access to their enclosure and how someone could have gotten them out. Obregon applies his tracking skills and discovers that the plants here have withered to a certain degree and not from natural causes. Something must have flown down to get them due to the disturbance of the flora. A death knight on a nightmare would account for both of these. Nothing else of note happened around the same time as the theft. We go to check in with Kellick and seek some advice.

We continue to move towards the exit finding the major doors spiked open. To be cantankerous, we remove the spikes as we go. The secret door in the troll lair is closed, however and when Pike opens it, we see 3 Tyrones (the demonic bird) on the stairs in our way. Beltin moves in and breathes acid causing 2 of them to vanish as they were only illusions. Gonoan moves up and hits the real Tyrone but fails to penetrate. Pike follows suit but misses. Sanna joins the fray and hits it with a hand full of magic missiles. It puts out more spores which hit Pike and Gonoan, then says “I’ve got to get the iron golem” and vanishes. Vines start growing out of them both but we are able to mitigate most of the damage. We start running up the stairs and after a couple of levels, Tyrone appears above us again, saying “Come here”. Obregon hits him with an arrow, Beltin spits acid for no damage and Gonoan takes a small piece out of his hide. Pike moves in to position for his deadeye shot while Sanna hits him with yet more magic missiles. Once more, he vanishes. We reach the top of the stairs and begin moving the rocks out of the way. When we break through, we can see Tyrone through the hole. Obregon puts an arrow in him but it is only an illusion which vanishes. We keep moving rock until we can get through but find Tyrone has vanished again. We make our way out, stopping to settle with the tower wardens. They take over 453 gp from us. Once we are on the road, we notice Tyrone flying above us. Obregon shoots at it, hitting 3 times and it suddenly plummets from the sky. We move to where he lies and Obregon cuts off a claw and Beltin plucks a handful of feathers. Pike takes its head as well. We arrive back at Greyhawk and split up. Sanna, Gonoan, Pike and Nat head to the mage’s guild with the dragon carcass while the others head to the church of St Cuthbert. Upon arrival at the mage’s guild, Sanna shares our experiences with her contact attempting to stress the upcoming threat. Pike also tries to make this a big deal but the mages guild is not overly concerned. We sell the dragon to the guild for 12000 gp. Pike attempts to trade the Vrock head for a ring but they only offer 2000 gp. We take them up on that. Meanwhile, at the church of St Cuthbert, we ask for Eritae. Once we meet her, we relate our story. She is curious if the ease of our time was a ruse and who the other master is. She tells us that the city is planning an attack on the forces of Iuz within the ruins but didn’t want to unless they were able to actually get them. She asks what we need and we ask for advice on defeating summoned creatures and golems. She recommends items that cause rust. We head home and Sanna identifies our magic items. Pike and Obregon head to the thieves guild house to check in. Tiira send him to Kellicks tower. Pike tells Obregon if things go sideways to run back to get the rest of the group. Upon arrival, the portcullis opens and we move down a hallway lined with murder holes to a sitting room where we are seated at the table. Kellick comes in and sits at the head of the table. He introduces himself and mentions he is a master of dragon chess. He thanks us for helping with the wight problem. He finds it interesting that we have survived several visits to the ruins. He believes we may have earned a place among them but he needs to know more about us. We notice unusual objects around the room. He is a collector and sometimes seller of exotic goods and could use more people to help him obtain such objects. He wonders if we have anything of interest after our numerous visits. We prevaricate and stall, not wanting to share the specifics. Tiira arrives after a while and wants to know what has been going on. She is more interested in the party than just Pike as she may have a job for us. Pike shares our adventures with them both. She wants to meet with the rest of the party at another location but wants Pike to stay with Kellick for now. She recommends returning the sword of chaos to Rikard as he is a good ally and we should keep on his good side. Obregon returns to the party, and relays the message to us. We sell our loot off and earn 12,752 gp, 4 sp and 7 cp each.

Pike searches the throne but finds nothing. We move through the door behind it and go down some stairs to a 4way junction. Straight ahead ends in rubble, to the left is a door and to the right is a long room with 2 tables and a large book case. Pike listens at the door and hears a voice in common relating the disaster in the arena to the “master”. Pike opens the door and sees a goblin sitting at a desk speaking to a glowing crystal skull. It squeaks “Master they are here, save me”. Pike hits it with a crossbow bolt, killing it instantly. Beltin grabs a woven rug off the floor and tosses it over the skull. Gonoan moves in to the large room and notices the bookcase is full of books about Greyhawk, more such books are out on the tables along with a large map. Pike searches the goblin and finds nothing. A voice comes from the skull requesting to know who ruined “my” plans. Beltin begins speaking with it but it hears Pike rifling through the drawers. It warns us to stop searching or he will kill us here instead of later. Gonoan says he is going to destroy it and it spontaneously shatters. The bird-like creature that had decapitated our prisoners on our last trip to Greyhawk appears. Pike dives behind the desk and Beltin hits it with a line of acid. Obregon hits it with 3 arrows. Sanna casts magic missile but it fails to penetrate. Gonoan smashes it with his axe 3 times while the creature flexes it wings and spores fly out of it dealing damage to Beltin, Gonoan and Sanna. It introduces itself as Tyrone and proceeds to beat up on Sanna, knocking her unconscious. It hits Gonoan a couple of times a well. Pike lines up a shot, Beltin hits it once but does no damage. Obregon plants 4 more arrows in it while Nat heals Sanna. Gonoan hits it and Pike puts a bolt in its throat. Gonoan hits it again and it vanishes. The spores begin growing out of our skin. Nat thinks he needs to use a med kit to counteract them. After further examination, he determines that poison control or holy water is needed. After a short while the spores stop growing though we are covered in tiny vines. We focus on healing while Obregon and Pike start looking in to the other rooms. The first is a bedroom with a chest at the foot of the bed. Pike checks for traps but finds none. He tries the keys we found on the general and one fits. Inside is a stack of letters which he hands to Obregon, along with a pouch with 45 platinum pieces and 2 rubies. The rest of the room is empty of items of interest. The next room is a dirty mess with the smell of goblin in it. The next has casks and crates in it. They contain 2 casks of wine, a cask from the shield lands, a box of nice military uniforms, and a crate of dried food stuffs. Beltin and Sana begin wandering the rooms with the detect secret doors wand while the rest of the group searches the room with the bookcase. The map laying on the table is of greyhawk with several areas on the west wall marked with ink. We move to the arena exit which the dragon came out of; it leads in to a cavernous chamber filled with a foul stench with a mound of bones and treasures on one side. Pike and Obregon begin digging through it and find 28 pp, 324 gp, 128 sp, 37 cp, a withered hand on a chain, composite short bow, and a pearl. We move through the other open gate and find 4 cells. One of which is occupied by a human male. His name is Fidd and was adventuring in the upper levels. His party was attacked by orcs and the rest of his group was either killed then or in the arena. He claims to be a note taker. We open his cell and give him food and drink. He points to another cell where his companions gear is stored but we find it is empty. He is disappointed that his gear is missing. Obregon is reading through the letters from the chest and they are lists of supplies to go to the tower of magic, instructions for surface raids, and the timeline for attacks. The dates indicate an attack in the next couple of weeks. We decide to head back with Fidd to report on this information as soon as possible. As we move back through the levels, Obregon notices a possible ambush in the room with the large crevasse. Obregon and Pike move up to check it out, using all of the stealth at their disposal. There is a large iron golem in the room and we decide to head the other way, our goal being to get out. Will we reach the relative safety of Greyhawk in time?

Pike searches the altar but finds nothing except the bowl, candles and dagger which we take. We look into the chasm of woe which descends 50’ into rushing water. To get the team on one side, we tie a rope to each, belay it on the bridge post and Gonoan anchors it. Obregon and Natauru make the jump while Sanna misses and bounces off the wall but Gonoan pulls her up the rest of the way. Nat begins checking the features and determines the rusty red skeleton is of Nerull and the altar is to the Old One or Iuz. Sanna uses the detect secret doors wand to check the rooms and finds nothing. Obregon searches the dais and other than determining that the statue has been disassembled and defaced, finds nothing. Pike checks the door and finds no traps or locks. He opens the door onto a stadium. An alarm begins to blare. There is an arena 10’ down in the center of the room, risers coming up both sides along the south and a balcony with a throne to the north. An armored individual sits on the throne, a goblin at his side and the master of hounds stands on the opposite side of the arena from us. Beltin asks if he is the general and he names himself At’Ur Rehmat. He asks for our names which we share. “Do you have any idea who you are trifling with? The empire of Iuz does not tolerate those who interfere with his plans. I am your executioner”. A nightmarish blue dragon with infernal symbols on its scales and blackened horns moves out of a tunnel into the arena. Sanna casts a burst of electricity; the dragon basks in it, the goblin dies, and the general and master take massive damage. Beltin moves up and breathes acid on the general. Obregon shoots 4 arrows at him but it deflects off his armor. The master moves up next to the general and opens the door behind the throne. Gonoan charges the dragon and hits it. Pike narrowly misses the general with a bolt. Sanna takes out both the general and master with a lightning ball. The dragon breathes lightning on Gonoan and Sanna. Nat casts prayer. Several of us then hear chanting coming from the west side but see no one. Sanna begins babbling incoherently and an armored priest appears. Beltin moves around and confronts it. Gonoan buries his axe in the dragon over and over until it dies. Pike turns invisible and moves. Nat gives some healing to Sanna while the cleric attacks Beltin, hitting once. Beltin hits him back twice and Obregon hits him with one arrow. Gonoan climbs out of the pit and moves next to the cleric while Pike takes a shot but misses. The cleric curses Beltins Intelligence who hits him back. Obregon puts 2 arrows in him, one goes through his throat. He attempts to curse at us but it only comes out as a gurgle. Gonoan subdues Sanna until she recovers from her insanity. Gonoan cuts off the head of the cleric in anger over the curses he cast. He then tosses it at Obregon and Pike for trying to tell him not to cut it off. Obregon shoots a sleep arrow back at him but it fails. Pike pulls the generals sword out and it speaks to him “I am the blade of chaos, what can I do for you” Pike begins having a conversation with the sword much to the consternation of some of the rest of us. It can cast darkness and ray of enfeeblement. Sanna tells Pike to put it away but he refuses. She then attempts to take it away by grabbing him and Pike has the sword cast the ray of enfeeblement on her. They wrestle for a moment until Gonoan intercedes, taking the sword and having Obregon put it in his quiver. The General’s gear is breastplateM, iron longsword of chaos, hand axeM, 2 ringsM, cloakM, gauntletsM, keys, 2 potionsM. The Cleric had full plateM, great swordM, ringM, holy symbol, vestments, scrollM, wandM.

Sanna and Beltin attempt to crank the elevator down but fail to move it. Obregon moves to help. The orcs manage to move up again. Gonoan joins us at the crank while Pike attempts to climb the elevator support. We fail to move them down again and they manage to finish moving up and escape. We crank it back down and Beltin destroys it with acid. We move back down via the other elevator where Natauru informs us that he heard something in the other room a minute ago. We arrange ourselves at both doors and enter together. The room is empty except for the worg bodies. Obregon can tell that something large slithered to the pool from the south and then out the northern door, dragging the master of hounds. We move to the door and Pike manages to pick the complex locking mechanism. The doors open onto a room with a large chasm bisecting it. There is a wooden bridge crossing the chasm which leads to another room lit partially by flickering torches. There is a bell ringing in the deep end of the chasm. Gonoan sees 2 gargoyles flying toward us from that direction. Obregon puts 3 arrows in to one of them as Beltin moves towards them. They fly past us and in to the other room which ends at a dais containing a rusty skeletal statue laying on its side. There is a door to the north. Sanna hits each with a scorching ray and Gonoan moves towards them. When he gets close he discovers that they are undead and announces as much. Obregon puts an arrow between the wings of the one he hit originally, slaying it. For good measure, he puts one in the other as well. Beltin moves up to them. The remaining gargoyle knicks Gonoan but gets knicked in return by Sanna. Pike hits it with a bolt. Gonoan hits it with his greataxe. All of a sudden, 2 flying swords of force move out of the a crack in the wall and begin to attack the bridge causing it to crumble in to the chasm. Then a door located in an unnoticed alcove near the dais opens revealing a squat humanoid with blubbery flesh and a mouth full of small sharp teeth. Obregon finishes off the gargoyle. Beltin sees there are 3 creatures and 2 priests in the other room. He moves to block the door. Pike jumps the chasm and takes a shot at the creature in the doorway but it fails to penetrate. Sanna casts an electric sphere in the room via a crack in the wall. One of the dretchs farts a stinking cloud but we manage to resist the noxious fumes. The acolytes move out of the cloud and recall their magical swords. Beltin spits acid killing 2 of the dretchs and one acolyte. Sanna throws an electric ball in to the room hurting the acolyte and doing no damage to the dretch. The remaining dretch begins summoning another while the acolyte goes invisible. Pike moves around behind the dretch and Beltin moves up and hits it. Gonoan moves adjacent and kills it in one blow. The acolyte attacks Gonoan with the spiritual sword and heals himself. Beltin charges him and gets in a good hit. Pike moves around behind him skewering him in the kidneys, dropping him. We take a moment to look around and find ourselves in a large room with cracks along the floor and walls. There is an altar on the far end covered with black wax and bones. There is a gold bowl with black candles beside it and a dagger inside. There is a crude painting of a screaming white skull above it. We loot the bodies and find splint mail, MW greatsword, silver holy symbol, scrollM, potion bottleM and vestments on each acolyte. How do we regroup?

The room the hobgoblins were trying to flee into is a fairly large room with a fountain under construction. The center is a statue of a man holding a sword aloft standing over a miniature city. There are areas of magical darkness to the left and right. The door from the elevator room is visible just on the other side of the statue. Sanna moves in to the room. Gonoan moves back up the stairs out of the darkness and Obregon activates a sunrod. Pike moves to the other door out of the elevator room and hears a large creature moving around as well as speech in a language we don’t understand. Nat understands that it is Goblin. Obregon moves to guard Pikes back while Beltin moves into the room and notices a pail of carving tools next to the fountain and that the city under the statues feet is Greyhawk castle. Gonoan moves up behind Pike, wondering aloud why he hasn’t opened the door yet. Sanna casts light and it penetrates some of the gloom but we see nothing else. Pike checks the door and opens it where he sees in to the same room that Beltin and Sanna are in. There is what sounds like an order in goblin from the southern darkness but no response. Beltin moves into the room and illuminates a worg who immediately charges him but fails to hit. Beltin hits it in return. Gonoan moves up to flank and gets hit in the process. During the attack, the worg attempts to trip him but ends up being tripped instead. Sanna walks up and hits it with shocking grasp. Pike lines up a shot when the other worg flies past him and flanks Sanna “You shall not kill Agony” but misses its attack. The prone one misses her as well and then attempts to get up but is knocked down by Gonoan and Pike puts a bolt through its eye, killing it. Obregon places an arrow in the flying ones head. Beltin finishes it off with acid breath. We pause to search the bodies and find 2 short swords(1M), chain shirt, 4 potions cure light, 16 +1 shock arrows, 20 arrows, 2 MW comp longbow +3str, 2 MW chain shirt, 2 heavy flail, 148gp, 9 tinder twigs, 2 smokesticks, 1 potionM, Mw silver sickle. Gonoan and Obregon hear the elevator moving in the other room. We take off that way and see the bottom half of an orc marauder as it ascends in to the ceiling. Obregon puts 2 arrows in its leg as it disappears. Gonoan grabs the crank and prevents the elevator from moving any higher. Pike moves in and hits it with a bolt while Beltin moves in to the room. Sanna moves in as well with Nat trailing her. Obregon hits it with 3 arrows and it falls. Pike moves to help Gonoan at the crank. Beltin spider climbs up and gets on the platform. Sanna casts fist of stone and goes to help with the crank while Obregon takes up a watchful pose. The orcs try to crank the elevator up but fail and several throw axes at Beltin but all miss. Gonoan and gang actually manage to move the elevator down a bit. Beltin moves up the shaft part way and Pike climbs on to the platform. The orcs toss the body of the golem down the shaft but Pike and Beltin avoid the falling debris. The rest of the team climbs on as well and Gonoan pushes the remains of the golem off the platform. Beltin finishes climbing and breathes acid on several orcs. The orcs then move four of their number on to the elevator and 3 attempt to hold off Beltin who hits one of them while dodging their greataxes. Our elevator moves up another level while the orcs fail to move theirs. We move up again, Beltin hits one again, the orcs go up and fail to hit Beltin again. We move up again as do the orcs, they attempt to grapple Beltin but fail and Beltin puts his Morningstar through ones head, killing it. We finish coming up, as do the orcs, and the last one in the room tries to hit Beltin but still misses. Beltin manages to land a hit though. Pike and Obregon finish off the last orc while Sanna moves to the crank. Let the tug of war begin…

Pike drops and tumbles away from the creature. Beltin breathes acid at it but it doesn’t seem as effective as usual. Gonoan gets in 2 good chops but they also seem to do less damage than expected. The golem hits Gonoan again with its flaming sword and claw. Obregon moves away and shoots at it twice but misses while Sanna climbs down to face the golem. She hits it with an electric lance but it seems to not do any damage. Beltin hits it with his morning star and Gonoan hits it 2 more times. It hits Gonoan with its sword once and squeezes with its claw but Gonoan squirms away. Nat attempts to turn it but fails and then he finishes climbing down. Obregon sticks two arrows in to it. Sanna casts magic missile at it but it fizzles just before it strikes. Beltin hits it once for no damage but Gonoan chops it down like the proverbial cherry tree. Timber! We begin searching the room , take the golems swordM and find nothing but the crates which contain more supplies. Pike takes the small statue of Boccob and puts it in his haversack. We notice that it had had a ring on it which left a green residue, likely copper or brass. Upon further examination, it appears that this may help find a library or book of Boccob. We set up the ropes on the elevator and Obregon and Gonoan start turning the crank. Beltin spider climbs down right above the rest of the group. As the elevator approaches the bottom, Gonoan sees a ledge to the east of this room with 3 hobgoblin archers aiming our way. This room has openings both west and north with crates and barrels scattered everywhere. Sanna hits one of them with a scorching ray while Gonoan climbs to the ledge and hits another with his axe. Pike hops to a crate and puts a bolt in ones gut. Both injured hobgoblins pull out and drink potions but one takes another hit from Gonoan in the process. Beltin hits the 3rd with acid and Obregon kills one. Sanna kills another with a ray while Gonoan finishes the last. We loot the bodies and find 5 potions, 3 composite long bow +3 strength, 22 +1 shock arrows, 30 arrows, 3 MW chain shirt, and 3 heavy flails. While we are searching the room, a secret door opens on the balcony and a hobgoblin ranger moves out followed by 2 worgs. Obregon shoots the ranger twice and Beltin hits all of them with acid, killing the ranger but not doing much to the worgs. Sanna hits the front one with magic missiles and Pike misses with his crossbow. The door to the north opens and 2 hobgoblins appear and draw bows. The front worg grabs the ranger body and moves back while the other growls at Gonoan. Obregon hits the worg dragging the body with 2 arrows and Gonoan hits the other. Beltinn moves down between the hobgoblins and the rest of the group. Sanna steps in front of him and casts lightning bolt at the hobgoblins. Pike fires but fails to hit one. The hobgoblins fire at Sanna, hitting her once and then close the door. The worgs move back again and the area gets magically dark. We pause to listen and hear frenzied movement in the room to the north. Beltin runs to the door and opens it. This appears to be a barracks type room with the two hobgoblins fleeing to the left through a door into a large chamber with arms full of loot. Gonoan decides to move down the darkened hall, slowly going down a staircase while Sanna runs into the other room and kills the hobgoblins with a lighning bolt. Where are those worgs?

Beltin visits the Silver Garter to see his saucy tart, Lathalydia. She tells him that there are a lot of wizards, priests and scholars in town so they are very busy. Sanna attracts a new follower, a female gray elf sorceress named Elaine. She is assigned to watch the house, keep her ear to the ground and study at the mage school. Pike arranges to meet with Tiira at the Green Dragon Inn. Obregon and Sanna accompany him. Sanna stays outside while Obregon enters separately and attempts to stay inconspicuous. Pike sits with Tiira who dismisses some other adventurer types as he approaches. She claims no one was trying to break in to our house. Pike does not believe her. Tiira wants to know if he wants to hire someone to watch the house as the traps were tested by the guild. We decide to trust the guild to keep an eye out. She warns us of the roads and excess wanderers on our way to the ruins. Sanna feels like someone is watching her but is unable to pinpoint. As Pike is leaving, he notices an unsavory looking couple of guys that we have met before and did not like but they don’t see him. After returning home, he makes eyes at Elaine but she does not return his attention. He then checks the traps to make sure they are still good. The next morning, we notice that people are gathering and assume the body of Rigby is arriving today. Beltin heads to the church of St Cuthbert to offer our assistance. Eritae is happy that we offer but just advises us to keep our eyes open. Going to the ruins would probably be the best help. Sanna takes Elaine and goes to the mages guild to make her a member and see if they need our help; they do not. Around noon, trumpets blare announcing the arrival of Rigby’s body. The processional begins moving slowly up the main thoroughfare. There are guards everywhere and even watchers flying overhead. Pike notices some adventurers in the crowd blending in and watching with the aid of magic items. The heraldry on the horses and wagons are Verbobonc. Everyone seems to be on edge and suspicious of everything. The next day, Sanna attempts to view the body at the church of Boccob and is allowed in. The viewing area is filled with wizards and mages worshipping Boccob. She hears that Rigby used to run this church until he left for seclusion after Iuz’s threat of revenge. There is a young female cleric of Boccob assigned to watch over the body. She is looking around the crowd as if attempting to spot trouble. Sanna greets her formally and she says her name is Rhiann. Sanna offers our services but she doesn’t seem to know who we are. Rhiann says this is probably an inappropriate time to talk but she would like to get to know her at another time. The next day, Sanna and Elaine attempt to gather information on Lawrus Racknian and Iuz. Lawrus is rumored to be in White Plume mountain. Later in the day, we notice that Pike is missing from the house and he left a note in the kitchen. “Sorry, I felt this was more important than waiting for toys. If I get captured, I don’t want you to do anything crazy except gather the party and save me. See you in 2 days.” He has gone to the ruins to see if Iuz’s forces are gathering. He arrives before noon without issue. He ties up his pony near the raven statue and sneaks closer on foot. He notices there are a lot of adventurers wandering around and there is sparkly purple smoke coming from the entrances to the tower of magic. He goes to investigate the smoke. The kobolds are still around, and do not seem hostile. They fail to see him but seem to be focused on what they are doing. Around the back, there are 2 small pyramids and 3 young priests of Zagyg hanging around. He listens to them but learns nothing of value. He begins to make his way back to his pony and encounters 2 ogres on the bridge. He shoots one who then moves up and tries to hit him but misses. He tumbles past the first one while hitting him with the shock gloves gravely injuring him. Both ogres attempt to hit him but fail again. Pike tumbles past the second one and pulls out a potion of invisibility. The ogres retreat and Pike leaves with some haste. He manages to return to town without any other encounters. He shares his adventure with the guild and us. After a few more days, we have collected all of our equipment and head towards the ruins. Once there, we move towards the room with the elevator that leads supposedly to the generals lair. The messes we made on the way have been cleaned up and the kitchen has been used. Obregon finds orc tracks leading through the secret door and a large humanoid has been moving around the area as well. Pike manages to open the door and we find the stores have all been moved out. The orcs have gone through the next secret door as well. Pike finds the door and opens it. The elevator is in the down postion about 50 feet down. It opens into a large room with crates along the wall and a statue in the corner near the elevator. Beltin spider climbs down the shaft with the others moving down on ropes behind him. He sees an elevator shaft going further down on the other side of the room and a stitched together large humanoid figure next to where we are coming out. Beltin drops to the ground and moves away from the flesh creature. Pike and Sanna move down the ropes and Gonoan drops to the ground. The creature comes to life, its long sword bursts in to flames and menaces with his claw. It swings at Gonoan, scoring a critical hit. It also scores a minor hit with its claw. Natauru moves down the rope and Obregon drops to the ground next to Gonoan. Fade out… (Gonoan took 29 points of damage)

We start buying equipment and upgrading items. Beltin and Obregon head to the Church of St Cuthbert. We ask for Eritae and are given an appointment for this afternoon. Gonoan and Pike visit Ret’s Taxidermy to inquire after having his goblin head shrunken. A stuffed Oytug sits outside. Ret Halocask is the young Halfling proprietor and has various bodily fluids splattered on his apron. “I normally do animals, not humanoids, but I should be able to do this”. He offers to turn it into something like a snow globe and Gonoan jumps at the chance. We also mention the wyvern carcass we have available. He tells us Lord Henway, in the Garden Quarter, would want it if it were still alive. He offers 700 gp for the remains. Sanna learns that the mages guild offers us 2000 gp for the wyvern. She also does some more research on Zagyg’s key and learns that there are several organizations that collect them and may have more information. Only one is local and non-evil, the church of Boccob. She also finds someone to enchant Obregon’s bow faster than normal; 8 days as opposed to 16. Meanwhile, Beltin, Pike, and Obregon go to the Church of Boccob to check on Altamayic. We are escorted inside to jeers from the crowd who don’t understand why we don’t have to wait as they do. As we enter the infirmary we see a quarantine area and learn that there are undead remains and people with diseases in there. Pike starts making a scene about being irresponsible and why would they allow that stuff in the city. They ask him to leave and call for a guard to escort him out. He leaves and once outside he yells it’s all a scam causing some people to move away from the church. Altamayic is awake and resting quietly in a semi-private area. He looks to be much heartier than he was just yesterday. He says he owes us a great debt for saving his life. He doesn’t remember much of the last few weeks since being kidnapped by some brutish orcs. We give a brief tale of how we found and rescued him. He warns us of more danger in the ruins, several more levels below, an arena of some sort and someone known as the general. The general is a human. There is a secret door across from his cell but he does not know where it goes. There is also a secret door behind some crates that leads down to where the general is. The church gives us 6 tokens which are good for a free spell casting of up to 5th level not including material components as a reward for returning Altamayic. We then meet with Eritae and show her the lists and letter from Atolomyr. She is grateful that we are around as things are very tense and resources are low. She fears that an attack is imminent from the forces of Iuz. Likely to happen when the body of Rigby arrives as they are old enemies. “So, go kick some ass”. We ask if they were able to learn anything from the bodies we brought in. They were not because the heads were removed by the Vrok preventing speaking with the dead. And it appears that Atolomyr was supposedly in two places at one time as he was seen at the orc raid while we were transporting him back to Greyhawk. She wants to know what odd things we encountered. We share everything we remember. She advises us to seek allies who may know more of where we are exploring or can watch our back. The enemy may be aware of who we are and what we are capable of so we may want to expand our repertoire to make sure we can be effective. Sanna attempts to locate a 2nd level sorceress as a follower. Gonoan and Sanna go to the Green Dragon Inn to drink for free on Ricards dime. This is a dangerous looking place but seems fairly friendly. Ricard is there and acknowledges us. We also recognize an elven woman that Pike has dealt with who is speaking with a wizard that was associated with the champion’s games. He is playing dragon chess vs someone whose face we can’t see. Gonoan and Sanna order drinks with the plan of getting drunk. The waitress (Bethel) expresses a desire to hear our stories but has no time now. We tip her 2 gp and invite her to sit and listen to our tales. She gets permission from Ricard. Sanna attempts to retell our stories with her being the big dog but doesn’t come off as believable. Pike shows up after a while also. He spots Tiera but heads to our table. The waitress fawns over him a little bit and he acts humble(what??). Ricard stops by and says hi, inquiring after how we like the drinks. Pike orders elven wine and is rebuffed when he tries to pay. Bethel takes a taste after Pike tries it but she doesn’t like it. She asks for Pikes stories. 7 more days until we head back to the ruins, however shall we pass the time?

A person who appears to be a priest of Boccob stands up from behind the broken statue. He says someone is alive and trapped under one of the wagons. Can you assist them or allow me to assist them. My name is Acton Kathanor. Gonoan moves towards the wagon to offer assistance. Pike moves out and orders Acton to stop or be shot. Acton pleads for someone to help as he is dying and may have been poisoned by the wyvern. Beltin moves to supply healing. “His name is Ricard Demaris and is the owner of the green dragon inn. He is a very important person, please help him”. Suddenly, a Large gangly bird like creature appears in the road. Obregon shoots at it and his arrow bounces off. The creature screechs but it doesn’t seem to have any effect. Beltin moves and spits acid at it though it doesn’t appear to do full damage. Sanna cast a hail of stone at it. Obregon casts Hunter’s Mercy. The creature moves to the Atolomyr and rips his head off. Pike attempts to shoot at it but misses. Gonoan moves towards it while Beltin moves in front of the where the wyvern rider lies. Sanna hits it with a scorching ray but it has no effect. The creature flies towards the rider and takes a hit from Gonoan. It lands and shakes the head off of the rider in a spray of blood. Obregon tries to use his Hunter’s Mercy but misses. Gonoan runs after it. Beltin hits it but does no damage. Obregon attempts to hit it with an alchemist arrow but misses. It vanishes. Beltin heals Nat’s blindness and they begin going door to door looking for survivors who may need help. The priest does this as well. Pike begins looting the bodies. Rider-MW sickle, 2 MW daggers, cloak resistance+1 1000, lenses (eyes of eagle2500), 4 potions2 cure serious750,resist electric300, resist fire300. Orcs-4 MW throwing axes each, MW studded leather. Wyvern-custom bridle and saddle. The residents tell us what happened. A large group of orcs, some flying, attacked and looted, especially the wagons. They took what they could and left this smaller group to finish. Acton says that Ricard needs help back to town unless we want to heal him more. Beltin heals him and he looks at us, wondering who we are. He says we are welcome to use his inn free of charge for saving him. Acton notes that Ricard is still poisoned. Acton recognizes the stupefied guy as Altamayic, a priest of his order. Beltin takes Acton, Ricard and Altamayic to Greyhawk and to the church of Boccob. The priests rush Altamayic inside and thank us heartily. Beltin then walks Ricard to the green dragon inn. Ricard is talking a lot and asking lots of questions. He mentions that it is shame about Rigby whose body they are bringing back in to town. He was a hero of Greyhawk. Ricard speaks about his missing sword of chaos and offers a reward for its return. The inn is in the river quarter and the locals are fairly shabby. Beltin then goes to the church of st Cuthbert and seeks audience with Eritae. She is not available because of the chaos surrounding Rigby’s return but he speaks with another priest and relays our adventures and needs. The priest takes notes and will pass it on to Eritae. He believes there is more here than typical dungeon delving. They will provide us a hearse and wagon and we move out to the bridge. The locals help us load up and we go directly to the church; Sanna and Pike go with the wagon to the mages guild. The mages move it inside and ask what we want in exchange. Sanna says that she will take whatever they offer. The rest of the caravan goods we take home for now. Beltin and Gonoan go with the hearse but the church does not have the proper spell ready to heal him and advise us to come back in the morning. Meanwhile, back at our house, Nat notices that someone has been messing with his traps and Gonoan tracks them and finds they tried to come in through the cellar. They did not get in though. The next morning we get Gonoan healed. Meanwhile Sanna checks in at the mages guild and relates our adventures. They would like us to go back as soon as possible. She learns that the Key of Zagyg we found could be very powerful and/or valuable to the right people. It is supposed that his keys can unlock different areas of the ruins and can even have other abilities. We rent a cart and take the trade goods to the merchants union. There is a sharply dressed human, Unthias, who is a lesser servant of the trading organization. He thanks us for recovering these items. He wants our story but we are reluctant to speak to him as he is unknown to us. We ask to speak with Yala Sory. We share our adventurers with him. After speaking with us, he rewards us with 500 pp. He supposes that we have done significant damage to the bandits since they were forced to raid the hovels in search of supplies. It seems that Iuz is likely behind all of this. After leaving there, we begin asking around about Amarinna Starwatch whose remains we have. The thieves guild knows of her and she was a rogue some time ago. She disappeared and took up with some sort of cultist. They ply Pike for information and he coughs it up. We allow them to have her remains and Pike enjoys a rise in status. We then begin selling off our loot. Shopping anyone?
